Cabling and Wireless

When it comes to choosing between a cable or wireless system there are a few things that need to be considered.

Local Area Networks (LAN) were traditionally implemented using cabling. In recent years and with the added popularity and benefits of flexible working both for the employer and employee, wireless LANs have become easier and often cheaper to create and maintain. As with most technology solutions, there are pros and cons when deciding on which option is best for you.

Wireless Networks

Wireless networking frees the user from being physically tied to a network. Wireless offers greater flexibility and mobility and allows office-based wireless workers to connect to the network without sitting at dedicated computers with the bonus of being able to work while off-site.

Wireless network can often cost less to install and maintain than a cabled network. With the elimination of cabling there is no physical connection of drilling holes and laying cables and eradicates the need to rewire the office if, you decide to locate to another site.

Wireless can have the down-side of occasional difficulties in signal quality which is sometimes experienced with wireless networks and interference and coverage in some buildings can lead to 'black spots' when a signal or no signal is available.

Another disadvantage of wireless networks as opposed to cabled networks is that wireless is generally slower so in larger wireless networks, often the main network will usually be cabled.

Keeping a wireless network secure can be a problem. Wireless networks are more vulnerable to attack than traditional cabled networks because wireless transmissions can be intercepted.

Worcester,Worcestershire and West Midlands based D&D Networks D&D took over the management of our College network several months ago and have begun to make a tremendous impact on our physical infrastructure and daily working practices. Through a wealth of experience they have been able to pre-empt any possible issues and, where equipment required immediate upgrade, have lent us a replacement until we are able to find the money to purchase, in our case a core switch. They are currently with us one day per week for one technician, but there has frequently been two technicians onsite to ensure things are running well. As Dell partners they are able to get us very competitive quotes on a range of equipment and, due to the contacts they have in the industry, have introduced us to a host of suppliers who are just as helpful and knowledgeable. D&D's pricing structure is fantastic and since replacing our outgoing Systems Administrator with them the College has saved money equivalent to a member of staff.
